A Message from our President Andy Bell
Another year has flown by and here we are planning another Mince Pie walk closing out
another successful walking year. We have organised about 100 Sunday and mid-week walks
with an average 12 of walkers each time (that’s 1200 pairs of boots over the year), it’s safe to
say we are thriving on the walking side of the club.
We have been a little quieter on the social side but the forthcoming Ceilidh is sure to make up
for this. Thank you, Glynis, for all your efforts to organise this.
The Adventure Group, which was a social as well as a walking event appears to have met its
demise with the ever-increasing cost of accommodation – the YHA no longer offers
reasonable accommodation – and many of the Group regulars getting to that point in life
where the walking is too much. Some ideas are being considered as to how we continue this
tradition, watch out for further announcements in the New Year.
Finally, on behalf of the Committee and myself, may I wish you all a Merry Christmas and best
wishes for the New Year.
I would also like to thank some of our members for their particular contributions to another
successful year for Morley Walking Club – Michelle for the website and her excellent
photography contributions – Ian for managing the walks calendar – Lizzie (and Tony) for
organising trips and ensuring the Tea shop Walks and Veterans group keep going – Glynis for
organising the Ceilidh and being ‘Mother Hen’ to us all – Richard for our quality newsletter
Charity Links
The committee is aware several of our members have links with and promote various charities.
If you wish to make yourself known as a point of contact for a particular charity or have a
charitable event coming up, email the club, a committee member or myself
Richard.clapham@icloud.com with a paragraph on your subject and we will include it in the
next newsletter. If enough interest is shown I’m happy to generate and circulate a separate
bulletin
A message from our walks leader Ian Pickering
We are halfway through our current walks calendar and our walking numbers are positive.
January is a great month to shed those extra pounds we gain over the Festive period. We have
a full program starting 5th of January, a medium moderate walk, meeting as usual 9:00 am
Morrisons Carpark. We are planning to lead a New Years Day Walk, the nature of this will be
advised nearer the time but we’ll try to keep it local and not too strenuous.
Adventure walks. Something for those lighter mornings, an earlier start, a walk further afield,
a summit, a peak just out of reach of our normal short, medium and long walk start times –
Adventure walks on the 4th possible 5th Sunday of the month. Currently at the planning stage.
We’ll explain more nearer the time of starting walks.
A heads-up, after New Years, Ian will be asking for walking leaders for our summer calendar.
Why not give it a go, if there is somewhere you have always wanted to walk but you’ve never
led a walk, there are previous leaders who are willing to help, give them a shout.
We need your help
We always need volunteers to manage or help organise some events if we are to continue with them. So if you can help please contact our secretary who has kindly offered to collate this info for the committee. It’s your chance to put your own slant on an event or bring something new!!
Veterans Section
The Veterans Section meet once a month for an outing, sometimes by coach, sometimes by bus and now and again in cars. We’d love to have younger and more active members along sometimes, either as ‘helpers’ or merely to join in the fun. Car drivers are particularly welcome, to enable us to visit rural Yorkshire areas during the summer months. If you want to discuss this further please contact Lizzie Lowe (contact details on your printed version of the newsletter)
